The world is a darker, more sinister place. The myths of ancient vampires, bestial werewolves and powerful wizards are not quite as easily dismissed as people may like them to be. Most people go about their daily lives much as you and I do today, unaware of hidden societies sneaking about under their very noses.
This is a world where creatures of myth stalk the earth, blood-sucking vampires, flesh-eating werewolves and mages wielding ancient eldritch power to cloud the mind and warp the very fabric of reality to their whim. Though they are all outnumbered by the teeming masses of humanity and thus ply their trade and live their lives hidden from mortal eyes.
In ancient times, the werewolves reigned supreme, fear and human tribal lifestyle keeping them from rising up. Then, as civilisation dawned and the lycans' territories were covered with human settlements, vampires began to rise to power, reigning over mortal territories as shadowy lords and pulling the strings of mortal politics.
But now, in the modern days, since the rise of high technology and the slow decline of superstition, the unchanging vampires find themselves left behind by the changing nature of the mortal mind. Mages are now the dominant supernatural force in Europe and the rest of the first world. These are the Darkening Nights, a time where uneasy truces exist between the supernaturals and mortal hunters become more and more adept at putting down the 'abominations'.
This is a gothic world where the shadows are deep, the masses are sullen and depressive, and you never know what's lurking around the next corner...

The City
Europe has been a hot-bed of supernatural phenomena for hundreds, if not thousands, of years and so it is unsurprising that the most active supernatural communities are to be found there. With the modern political landscape for the world's occult beings, and their associations, or preferably lack thereof, with mortal society it is surprising to find so many of each type of being living so close to each other than in this central European city.
It is like most cities of its size, having both a university and a Christian cathedral, as well as numerous other places of worship. Its age can be seen from the moment one enters the actual city centre, this is a city that has been around since the middle ages, and the architecture, especially around the cathedral and similar historical locales reflects this. Though the modern times are showing in the chains of shops and corporate interest that has been growing over the past several decades.
It is an important place for supernaturals for many reasons, not least of all how hotly contested it is and has been over the generations by the various groups. But now, as the mystics rise to dominance, of a sort, over the other factions, they hold their council within its confines. This of course, does not preclude the sizable vampiric and lycanthropic populations that dwell within and around the city.
This is contested ground still despite what the mages might say, and there are many stories to be told, many conflicts to be resolved, within this ever growing haven for the supernatural.
