Background
Born in the thriving port city of Chencun, Lee-Ben was given up by his parents, and was raised by the Lièquǎn (Hunting Dogs) Crime Syndicate. From an early age he was involved with the business of smuggling, prostitution, drug dealing, Racketeering, and gambling. As well as being a shrewd and intuitive individual, Lee-Ben was extremely loyal to the organisation, whom he perceived to be far more of a family to him than any blood relation could claim to be. Trained in the "Raised White Eyebrow" style of martial arts, Lee-Ben was often dispatched as both a mediator, and an enforcer when it came to dealing with other syndicates.
Rising Conflict
A rival gang, the "Red Spears Society" (Hung Cheong Wui) engaged the "Hunting Dogs" in a turf war. Outmanned and outmaneuvered, the Lièquǎn were quickly destroyed. Having managed to escape the traps set for him by the RSS, Lee-Ben vowed revenge. Surreptitiously, he began to leave tip-offs for the local constables, locating and identifying RSS safe houses, associates, and members. His crusade hamstrung the RSS, and eventually the gang collapsed. However, three key members of the group - the Dragon Head (He Kuai-Heng), Incense Master (Fang Ren-Shang), and Red Pole (Xu Bao-Le) managed to escape. For his efforts, Lee-Ben was awarded the position of "Inquisitive" and granted a seal by the ruling council of Chencun, he set out soon after, searching for any leads to his quarries.
Story Title: Storm in a Teacup
Guest Starring: Tang Kai
Travelling to Duplikest, Lee-Ben Was approached by a local constable called Tang Kai, who'd been called in to investigate a murder. A bride and groom had been celebrating their wedding night at the groom's house. In the midst of the night however, the bride had complained of a persistent pain in her stomach, and by the morning had expired. From the symptoms, it was clear she had been poisoned. As far as Tang Kai was concerned, there were two possible culprits. One was a friend of the groom's, A Mr. Chiao, who had quarrelled with the Groom's Father (Shi Bai-Lei) during the celebrations, and Made several threats. The other, accused by the Same Mr. Chiao, was the maid of the house, with whom Mr Chiao claimed the Groom, a Mr. Shi Mao-Tan, had always been close and intimate. Both theories were plausible, and thus Tang Kai Sought an Inquisitive's aid to solve the matter.
Guest Starring: Shi Mao-Tan
When Lee-Ben arrived at the house of Shi Bai-Lei, he proceeded to question both Mr. Chiao and the maid. Immediately Lee-Ben was certain that neither had perpetrated the murder. Mr. Chiao had simply been drunk, hence his outburst, and the maid had come from the house of the bride, so a relationship between her and the groom could not possibly have existed before the day of the wedding. Of course this then left the question of how the bride had come to be poisoned. Running through the course of events, Lee-Ben discovered the key to the case. In her bid to prepare tea for the bride and groom, the maid had discovered the kitchen fire had been allowed to burn out. Desperate to finish her task, the maid took a portable stove and lit it on the kitchen porch. As the water boiled, steam rose into the rafters. an adder, which had made the porch roof its home emerged from its hole to bask in the warmth. Mouth ajar, venom had dripped into the water as it boiled. The maid then took the water straight to the bridal suite to make the tea for the bride and groom. More people could have been poisoned, yet having refilled her jug from the pan on the porch, the maid had tripped and spilled it all. By this time the kitchen fire had been reignited, whilst the pan on the porch was empty. Thus the next jug of water came from the kitchen and was therefore free of the adder's venom. During the course of the celebrations, the groom had consumed too much rice wine and thus had found himself with no appetite for tea before bed, thus avoiding his wife's fate. Having demonstrated all this to be the case, Lee-Ben exonerated both suspects of murder, and solved the mystery. In the process he earned himself the friendship of the Shi family, merchants with connections to Chencun and a wide circle of highly positioned friends - connections which could be very useful to Lee-Ben.
Guest Starring Redux: Gan Tian-Ren
News of the successful conclusion of the Shi murder case quickly spread through the district. Other people soon flocked to ask Lee-Ben's assistance. One day however, whilst drinking tea with Shi Mao-Tan in the marketplace, Lee-Ben was accosted by another man wielding the seal of an Inquisitive. Gan Tian-Ren had long sought the arrest of Lee-Ben for the murder of his father, Gan Zhi-Nuan, whom had been a Constable investigating the Lièquǎn back in Chencun. The name rang no bells to Lee-Ben, yet before he could protest his innocence, Gan Tian-Ren attempted to restrain him. The two men grappled and traded blows, and it was only during the combat that Lee-Ben realised he knew exactly who Tian-Ren's father had been. Finally pulled apart by men loyal to Shi Mao-Tan, he told Gan Tian-Ren that his father, rather than being a man of the law, had in fact been a member of the Lièquǎn, a mole who had betrayed their trust for money from other gangs. When Tian-Ren claimed these stories to be slander, Lee-Ben recalled Gan Zhi-Nuan's unique birth mark across his face. Breaking loose of the Militia's' grasp, Tian-Ren vowed that he would assuage his father's spirit with Lee-Ben's life.. At this moment however, the cries of "Make way, constables!" was heard approaching the market place. Seeking to avoid arrest, Tian-Ren promised Lee-Ben that their business was not finished. and with that he disappeared into the crowd. Equally eager to avoid incarceration, Mao-Tan and Lee-Ben made good their escape.
