As noted in the rules for character creation, it is possible to have vampires and werewolves with magical prowess. However, both as a form of balance and in order to keep things making sense within the metaverse we have created, there are some restrictions on what magic can be used by the inhuman supernaturals in the world of Darkening Nights.
Vampires:
Being, in the grand cosmic schema, unliving entities, vampires find it impossible to commune with the base elements of the world, leaving the traditions of the Wild mage's closed to them. Similarly, the insanities that grip their minds make the use and learning of psionics dangerous. Some claim to have done so, but these are often considered the ramblings of madmen within the vampiric clans. Consequently, most vampire magi will commonly rely on Hermetic magic, often including the use of blood as a material component in ritual due to its symbolic representation of a vampire's inner power. Being effectively immortal, vampires who have spent significant time studying the hermetic arts can be surprisingly powerful when compared to their mortal counterparts, as many hermetic practices can take years to perfect; years that the immortal vampires can afford to spend.
Werewolves:
Werewolves live with a split mind, wolf and man existing in the same body. Such dichotomy of mentality causes their minds to reject the abilities of psychics, an ability unique to humanity that is unable to exist alongside the primal, animal side of their lupine selves. It is, however, this same primal nature that gives the lycans such a great affinity with the world's Wild magic. Many large lycan packs will have 'seers' or shamans, wild magic users who guide the pack with their wisdom, a practice left over from the most ancient days of the race, which may have been adopted by humanity in its tribal days out of respect, or fear... or perhaps the other way around, no-one is truly sure. Hermetic magic is a somewhat contentious issue. There is no reason that a lycan cannot learn the hermetic arts, save their propensity to live for the moment, like their animalistic kin. Many lycans do not have the patience to spend the years in study necessary for mastery of hermetic magic, but, if they can stomach the studiousness required, a lycan may become a physically imposing magus.
Rules note: In order to create a vampiric psychic, or a werewolf hermetic, an application must be sent to an admin for approval. Vampiric hermetics, or werewolf wild magi may be created without application, within the boundaries of the rules for both mystics and the appropriate species.
