Day 1
The room looked as any other writer’s office did, well lit, spacious and in a permanent state of disorganisation. Paper was everywhere, upon desks, seats, the floor, pinned to walls, and amazingly, attached to the ceiling. Away from the collection of desks at the far end were two faded sofa’s and a collection of mismatching chairs surrounding a large coffee table, again covered with paper emblazoned with odd pieces of writing, spider diagrams and sketches. Throwing some of these onto the floor, Rufus tried to clear space for three steaming mugs, utilising some older papers as coasters.
‘Right’ he said, lowering himself into one of the comfier armchairs, ‘I don’t mind telling the both of you, I need this production to work. We have already had two failures, and I’m putting everything into this last one, so I need people, ideas and a budget, that’s why you to are here.’
‘Fak me boss, bit of a tall order innit?’ replied Richard ‘Kit’ Marlowe, his permanently rumpled and messy suit strangely fitting in with the ever-present mess of the room. ‘Now I don’t mind making sets and effects for you, but writing and directin’s a little out my game, not to mention trying to produce something like this.’ He sips his tea thoughtfully ‘We got anyone for that role?’
‘Amico, that is surely what I am here for!’ Amando took a swig of his coffee, and tried his best not to spit it back out, ‘ergg, instant’ his mumbled under his breath. ‘Give me a few good people and I can get some soldi together for this’ he paused for a moment. ‘What the hell is the production anyway?’
Rufus sighed, ‘I’m thinking of doing Codex’ he said after a moment.
‘Welp, that’s not too bad’ Kit replied ‘We can use some of the leftover scenes from that Shadowrun one a few years ago, couple’a extras we had pegged for Last Light, half done costumes for Clocktower-London are still in storage 23...’
‘Umm, not that Codex, I meant the old version’
The stream of tea narrowly missed Rufus and covered a poster showing a Knight Hospitalier decapitating a monster covered in spikes. Amado took the opportunity to look surprised and surreptitiously pour the remained of his coffee into a potted gardenia whilst no one was looking.
‘Are you fakkin’ mental boss? We never even tested that one, let alone found a system that works for it!’
‘Actually, the FATE system could be used with a little tweaking...’ Rufus looked over towards Amando, who was grinning profusely.
‘Finally a proper system! It has the dramatic style, but tempered with realistic base!’ he mimed drawing a sword and swinging at an imaginary adversary upon the wall.
Rufus beamed at Kit, obviously excited about the idea of a new project. ‘And the aspect system means that we can really go nuts with some of the special effects, the camera work could also help with the atmosphere a lot, and we could actually get a CGI department to do the touch ups on some of the scenes.’
Kit spluttered out the last vestiges of tea from his lungs ‘But you are forgetting that WE AVE NO BUDGET!!!!!!! And no one’ll finance this due to the last one being such a failure!’
Rufus’s face fell, and he sat back in his chair thoughtfully, Kit winced and tried to back away from his comment.
‘I didn’t mean it like that, but we need to face the facts that we’ve got nothing prepared for this one, no PC’s, no background, no props, no extras, and most importantly, no budget.’ He sighed, ‘How the hell were you going to get it anyway?’
Rufus sat forwards in the chair again, steepleling his hands and grinding his teeth slightly.
‘Private investors’
‘And how is that going to work?’ asked Amando
‘You are going to Nick it off them’
Amando’s face was blank for the faintest of seconds, before the wide eyed look of incredulity stole upon it. ‘And who from?’
‘Anyone who deserves it’
‘WHO!!!’ Both Kit and Amando screaming in unison
‘The FOX Network’
Amando sighed ‘This isn’t about Firefly again is it?’
‘Not just them, Matt Ward as well’
Kit stopped for a second ‘Well, he does kinda deserve it...’
‘Stephaney Meyer?’
The Grin on the two men’s faces was truly an evil sight to behold
‘Ohohohoho DIBS!’ shouted Amando. He turned towards Rufus, ‘but I’m going to need some help with it, Capo.’
‘Well, I was thinking of calling in some favours, Ramierez d’Astrega has some experience in this kind of production, and I thought he could help with FOX’
Kit nodded ‘And well need the Spearhead to deal with those waves of ninja lawyer minions that they have’
‘And I was thinking of sending Kameo Nachtmantel after that Twilight cow, and Jack Narinus after Matt Ward.’
‘Ha, good calls. But we’re still missing some stuff here.’ Kit pulled out a small notepad and began writing down a list. ‘Ok’ he continued, ‘First off, I expect that you’ll be writing the script’ Rufus nodded vigorously in reply ‘Ok, we better get someone for PR to deal with the complains-I’ll put up a job advert. Costumes will be a pain; we’ll reuse most from Ascalon, and Last Light, see if we can’t scrounge some from other studios, try asking at Coleman Productions for some spare stuff from their Kingmaker production that they are doing. Special effects will be handled by our good friend Amando here, when he’s not trying to extort money out of people.’ He looked up at the two other men in the room and sighed again, ‘Our biggest problem will be getting some decent PC’s, we need people the audience will like, and more importantly will keep things interesting.
Rufus sighed and rested his chin in his hand, thinking for a second of potential candidates. ‘Well, we could do a fresh crop, see if we can’t get some new PC’s in, and we can screen them to make sure that we are not going to be sued for copyright infringement again.’
All three men winced at that particular memory, there were reasons no one messed about with Ginax.
‘Alright, let’s get to it!’ Rufus clapped his hands magnanimously, ‘Amando, you look at finance, Kit, resources, Ill set up adverts and screen PC’s and NPC’s.’ His smile broadened, ‘We might be able to actually pull this off.’
